GETTING STARTED
At STONEHILL we work hard to help customers enhance (or start) their interest in many areas of fiber arts, including spinning, knitting, and rug-hooking. We strive to carry the finest equipment and supplies. Our staff is constantly working on projects and attending workshops to improve and expand their skills. Sometimes, they change the layout of our shop to better show our customers what has been learned. For example, this summer we dedicated a corner of our shop to hadnwerk.
What is HANDWERK?
Handwerk is the local German word for "Handwork". Those who enjoy handwerk practice a wide range of fiber art skills - embroidery, knitting, quilting, samplers, needlework and more. The nice thing about handwerk is that many handwerk projects can be done while relaxing, watching TV, or riding in a car.
"Piecework" magazine is a resource for those who practice the art of handwerk. Stonehill always keeps a supply of "Piecework" magazines available for customers. In addition, we have selected books that teach techniques in each area of handwerk.

How can I get started?
Historically handwerk skills were taught to daughters by their mother and passed down generation to generation. Today, with Stonehill's kits and specially selected books, handwerk skills are easy to develop at any stage of life.
Stonehill designed several kits which are sure to reward the beginner with success, create a useful finished product and be gifts that mothers could give to daughters and/or friends to introduce them tothe joy of hadnwerk. Each kit is self containte -- all materials, designs, and instructions needed to complete the project are included.
Note: Common household items such as scissors, straight pins, etc. are not included.

For starters, we recommend one of the following three kits:
Needlecase Kit: It uses vintage fabrics and reproduction textiles. The kit contains the patterns and coordinated calico and gingham prints. A hand-felted piece of wool is included as the perfect holder for your needle and pins. Small pockets hold your favorite thimble and small amounts of thread. Each kit is unique and truly one of a kind. Simply follow the instructions and then fold or hang your needlecase.
"Starburst" pincushion kit. This pattern was featured in "Early American Life" magazine. You can create it using our hand-dyed wool fabric and stuff it with wool fleece from our very own sheep. Instructions and materials are included in a kit for you to create your own pincushion.
Cheryl Kerestes' penny rug patterns are very popular and make a great first project. Cat in Space is our most popular folk art design.
